Maldives rejoins Commonwealth The Maldives has once again become a member of the Commonwealth of nations. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih made the announcement, fulfilling one of his key presidential pledges. The president said that the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland, confirmed Maldives’ reinstatement into the organization as its 54th member state.

China built Brazil’s Antarctic base Brazil has inaugurated a new US$100 million Antarctic base, built by Chinese company CEIEC to replace a research station destroyed by fire almost seven years ago. The new 48,375 sq ft facility was bigger and safer, with 17 laboratories, a heliport, and other advances. Scientists will use the base to study microbiology, glaciers, and climate, among other areas. Brazil’s programme was set back in 2012 when an explosion in the generator room caused a fire that killed two naval officers and destroyed 70 percent of the building.

Slovenian Prime Minister resigns Slovenian Prime Minister Marjan Sarec announced resignation and called for fresh elections, following weeks of rising tensions within his minority five-party coalition government. Mr Sarec's resignation came almost at the same time as Finance Minister Andrej Bertoncelj announced that he too would quit in a row over health care funding. Mr Sarec is Slovenia's youngest-ever Prime Minister.
