(I) Question on Alphabetical order :-

This type of questions, the position of an alphabet is asked from the right and or left and of the series.

(i) to the right of from the left and or

(ii) to the left of from the right and

Then

Both the positions of the alphabets will be added.

Question : 1 Which alphabet is at the 9th position to the right of 15th alphabet from the left end of the English alphabet?

Sol: Here, the required alphabet position – 15+9=24th from the left end;

Hence the required alphabet =x

Q.2 Which is the 4th alphabet to the left of 10th alphabet from the right end of the English alphabet?

Sol: Here, required alphabet = 4+10 i.e. 14th from the right end = (27-14)= 13th from the left end = M

(iii) to the left of ------from the left end or

(iv) to the right of ------from the right end then

Position of the alphabet is obtained by subtracting their position.

Q.3. Which is the 3rd letter to the left of 20th letter from the left end of the English alphabet?

Sol: Required alphabet = (20-3)= 17th

Alphabet from the left end = Q

Q.4. Which is the 5th letter to the right of 9th letter from the right end of the English alphabet?

Sol : Required alphabet = (9-5)=4th

Alphabet from the right end = (27-4)

=23rd alphabet from the left end = w

Q. How many letters are there between the 10th letter from the left end and 7th letter from the right end ?

Sol : 7th letter from the right = (27-7) =20th letter from the left.

Required number of letters= 20-10-1=9

(II) To find the letter pairs in the word:

Question :6. How many such pairs of letters are there in the English word PRISON as that of in the English alphabet ?

(A) 3           (B) 4           (c) 5            (D) 2

Sol:-

There are four such pairs of letters (PS, OR, No, and NR)

(III) Formation of meaningful words : In this type of questions, a word is given and it is asked to form meaningful words from the alphabets of the given word.

Q.7. From the letters of group of words ESRO, How many meaningful words can be formed using each letters only once?

Sol : Here only one word ROSE can be formed.

(IV) To arrange the given words in the dictionary order : This type of questions have some words, and you are asked to select the correct option in which these words are arranged as per the dictionary.

In dictionary words are arranged in alphabetical order. If the first letters of the words are same, then we look at the second letter of the word; and so at the second letter of the word; and so on. (As all

the letters of the words are arranged in alphabetical order in dictionary arrangement)

Q.8. Arrange the following words as per the dictionary arranged:

HOROSCOPE, HORRIFY, HORN, HONORARY

Sol :

As HO are common in all the four words. So, we look at the third letter of the word. N comes before R, so HONORARY comes at the first place.

Fourth letter : N comes before O and O comes before R: so HORN $\rightarrow$ HOROSCOPE $\rightarrow$ HORRIFY
